hey anon. im speaking from my own experience here:

drawing to what i THINK other's tastes are made me miserable. i didn't even see a massive follower spike from it either because the audience knows when your heart isn't in it. they won't follow a soulless asshole. (im referring to the majority and not the exceptions. ie: kronprinz, sakimi, etc)

you're under the misconception that your tastes are unpopular/unwanted. but if you draw what you're passionate about, the audience will find you. and they'll love your art because you love it too.


but let's say you're one of the successful shills who only draws what's popular. you hate yourself, but you finally garner the large audience you've been chasing after. now what? you're stuck. you're surrounded by people who don't like what you like. you're stuck pretending to be something you're not in order to keep your following.

after all this effort, you're back where you started: feeling unfulfilled and miserable about your art.
