It works alright, but pen and paper are better. On MS Paint you're focusing too much on producing an image instead of feeling it. Start on pen and paper, then see how far you've progressed on MS Paint.
I used to do random funny doodles for /a/, but after practicing for 2 months or so on pen & paper suddenly I can use those abilities on MS paint and it feels great. Your real-life doodles will look way uglier, but that helps you to not conformate and keep on improving while it's easy to make something look acceptable on Paint and that hinders progress.

This was just some adapted reference on Paint so it doesn't have any artistic merit but I liked how it ended up looking so here it goes, I think it's pretty.
