This guy posted as mindcandyman on conceptart.org. It is really a shame that art BBS are dead. Concept art and eatpoo were legendary.

everyone that worked 10h+ on CA seriously for more than a year went from /beg/ to working in the industry

you can also take a look at artposse forums, there's a couple of people with sketchbooks there who went from /beg/ to pro

a lot of people started their learning path by just aping others.

it's the most efficient type of learning you can do. the alternative is trial and error which will take far longer, it will yield more knowledge and understanding in the end, but it is not efficient.

a friend of mine got to a level where he'd earn more than his IT job in about 2.5-3years. His average was 4.5hours of work done every day, this number isn't some guesstimate or asspull, he used an app that tracks time spent in photoshop and other art-related programs. Usually he'd draw ~2hours during the week and 10+ on weekends. after he quit job, he'd work 10h++ on art everyday.

first 4-6months he had no real plan or routine, just drew fanart and shit he wanted. started from absolute zero at like 23. he could've started earning money around 2 years in, but wanted to get really good so he never took commissions and just grinded all the time.

it's been 5 years and he's working on AAA stuff now. from what I've seen most people who went from bad to good in a relatively short span of time(1-3years), practiced constantly for at least 2-3years. looking at around 3000-5000 hours of work done, depending on prior experience, talent, etc. before someone gets good enough to work for proper wages. I think this is similar to other fields where one has to practice their skills as well as build a good foundation in knowledge. 10k hours is kind of a meme, at that point you're the top 0,1% in an established field. think grandmaster in chess, or top 500 in most competitive video games, etc.

yes, jonathan hardesty. I think he was around 26 when he started from scratch.

bumskee started at like 24-25, think he didn't have any prior experience too.

most recent example I know of is wootha who started at like 31, he used 3D and photobash a lot but he's an accomplished illustrator and he made it in 1.5 years which is really fast for complete beg.

talent is real, but how did CA have so many people who went from being complete garbage to really good or at least decent?

never understood how one forum could be so based.

sketchbooks are gone, but all of thesee people(except FZD I think?) had a bunch of /beg/ crap on the conceptart forums.

glorious improvement. most of these made it in 2-3years.

today, after a long time I resisted to COOM and I actually drew for almost 3 hours straight.

is it ok to reward myself with a fap now? or should I try to not give in to the lust

It really makes you think how some places have like a bunch of talented artists who make it.

I guess /ic/ just attracts the other side. How many people from here actually made it? like tehmeh and olly and they're both from the CA generation, GG L ol

I wish CA or a website like it still existed. There were so many amazing artists there and they shared their knowledge with everyone.

Dave Rapoza says in his tutorials that he one day decided to PM a bunch of pro-artists and ask for advice and he just got it(I think he mentions marko djurdjevic, justin sweet, etc.)

something like that's really not possible anymore

Since I don't know what "good" means in this case, I'll assume you mean good enough to work in the industry.

if you draw 16h/day like RApoza did you can cut that down to ~1year.

there's no such thing as talent, just people who work hard to get better and people who don't. stop making excuses. some of these dudes went from beginner to semi-pro in 4 years or less because they worked hard.

quit job to try to git gud. it's been 5-6years and he's only now starting to draw/paint properly. mostly did photobash/3D at the beginning.

/ic/ is mean to him because he hasn't made it yet, he reinforces the talent meme and even though everyone flames him they secretly want him to make it so they can feel reassured about making it themselves.
