I like the idea of the rim light you have but I think it's a little too much especially on his coat thing. Technically I messed up a little as the the highlight should be coming from the top left instead of the bottom left of the eye because the rest of the lighting seems to be pointing in that direction. It helps to know the planes of the face in simple terms so you know how to light it. Since a change in plane= change in value you should really try to make all your values different even if they're subtle. I also didn't know if the blue mound under his neck was scarf or just a weirdly colored part of his coat, so I just fixed the lighting and left it as is. If isn't part of his coat then I'd suggest making the scarf slightly more saturated or change the local value of the scarf a lot to add some contrast to it.

how important is it to "memorize" these facial planes in andrew loomis' books? so far his construction methods have kind of changed or evolved since previous chapters and his book fun with a pencil, I feel like the more I read the more he'll supersede his own instructions. should I just try to copy some of these and make notes? AHH how do I study and self teach?
