What should I do to get better at using only line to represent something?

Pic sort of related. It's from a video about CSP, but I like how the artist is able to use so many different kinds of line to break up the head visually.

I never know when to use lost and found lines, or repeating "fuzzy" lines, or using the right thickness of lines. The picture might be a poor example, and I can make a better example when I get home from work, but hopefully someone might understand what I'm asking?
