I find it interesting knowing artists that only draw from imagination and can't bring themselves to go through the slog of studying, and artists that only study and are too scared to try to draw from imagination.
As always with these things, the key to continual growth is a balance between the two. The Goldilocks zone where you are both studying and drawing from imagination.
It's easy to stick to one thing you're used to because that is your comfort zone, but little growth will occur without expanding your zone of knowledge.
>It's boring
>It's too hard
>It's scary
>It makes me want to sleep
>It's intimidating
>It hurts my head
>It's stressful
>It's painful
These feelings come when you try to step into areas outside your zone, but when you do it a little, repeatedly step into that new area again and again, in time it will be integrated into your zone, and your zone of knowledge will increase. It becomes comfortable again, and you've grown just that little bit more. Add a little bit of imagination drawing to your studying, add a little bit of studying to your imaginative drawings, like a mother introducing greens to her child, you start with a little, make it a habit, and in time they're eating a healthy meal.
