you look at reference and then you draw it. you can even set up your workspace that you end up looking at your reference more than on your own canvas, which is recommended for max accuracy and feeling. the technique is called drawing blind

you are supposed to still draw a chair, but instead of trying to look at the mass of chair (wood, plastic), you want to look at the holes (air around the components). some people perform better where there is deadline or somebody yelling at them. school or some drawing course will probably be cheaper and better and still provide you peer pressure to perform. though how you mentioned job you are probably better off saving the cash for food
