>gesture is something you will ad should keep doing
I’m no pro or anything, but I agree with this. I don’t think it hurts to learn about gesture first before structure because without it, your figure studies would look rigid.

I think the common trap is that a lot of pre-beginners (including me) find it hard to move on from the “gesture chapter” unless their gestures look half as good as the ones they’re learning from. Like they can’t fathom that despite the simple nature of gesture drawings, they can’t seem to replicate it when the reality is, those “simple” gesture drawings look good because the artist also uses their anatomy and perspective knowledge. There’s not even one uniform way to do gestures. Some artists’s gestures look more fleshed out while some just use stickmen. Some would draw the centerline/bone to indicate limbs, while some would draw the outer outline.

Look at this monk drawing. The gesture is literally just a stick/paper man. But it is a gesture nonetheless and it served its purpose for the artist (capturing the action of the pose).

tldr: Do learn the how’s and why’s of gesture first when you get into figure drawing. But don’t dwell on it and try to make it look good for too long. Just keep practicing it while also moving on to proportions and anatomy and your gestures will naturally improve.

Kek
But it's definitely true that his sketching process takes some influence from Hampton, especially in his earlier days.
