this is a pretty pointless discussion imo. you'll always need refs to fill in the blanks, but for comics/animation you want to know a fair bit even without refs because you need a certain consistency to your drawings.

for example: you think you can get by without knowing all the proportions of the human body by heart? if you only draw a few images at a time, sure you can.
but if you're drawing a comic/animating, it will become apparent how much you don't fully grasp. see kronprinz, algenpfleger.
that is not to say that you can ever fully abandon refs. but you want to have a certain amount of knowledge in your head so you can wing a good part of your drawings even without them.
