it is a selection layer on CSP see img. It is essentially like a retreivable lasso selection. How to use it:
>create a selection with a lasso
>press 'Convert to Selection Layer' (this creates the green layer)
>if you have this green layer selected in the layers pallete, you can retrieve the lasso selection at any time using 'Convert Selection Layer to Selection'
>you can draw/erase on the layer to add/remove selection area, like a layer mask. soft edges also work here

In this case, its only used as a 'reference' selection to create the layer mask which is active on the folder. It's not used effectively here, but I've tried to integrate it into the workflow as good practice.

Better use of this feature is if you frequently deselect and reselect different regions on an illustration, you can ensure that your selections are the same each time by saving it, instead of lassoing freehand with error. For example (not done in the img), you could save selections around the cleavage or the hips to create consistent hard edges- this can be useful esp when working on a flattened image, but it's not needed here since I used clipping masks on silhouettes already with hard/soft edges.
