It's actually really unclear what you mean. If you mean just mimesis, art that imitates reality, then the classical sculpture of the Greeks is your starting point. However, you asked about painting, so that starts around the time of the Renaissance, specifically the High Renaissance, when Vasari and others start thinking seriously about perspective and imitating classical ideals.
