Or maybe - just maybe - it's because you haven't bothered lifting a finger towards trying to get those jobs. Quit making shitty excuses for your lack self-promotion. How many editorial illustration jobs have you pitch yourself for? How many art directors have you reached out to? Do you have an editorial portfolio, featuring stylistically appropriate work and relevant subject matters?

If you think you're better than this and you're interested in working jobs like this, you can reach out to them and share your portfolio. Even for The Guardian - I found their art & creative directors in seconds on Google. It's not complicated. If your work & website is good and your initial email isn't awful, then you'll be kept in mind for future jobs.

A mediocre artist who knows how to actively promote themselves will be magnitudes more successful than a skilled artist who sits around all day doing nothing to land work.

What's wrong with this? These are examples of art jobs that aren't porn, provided as a response to the two people who were not aware of different types of opportunities available to artists beyond porn.
