gen x boomer here. yeah this tracks with every art industry story I've heard, regardless of the industry. when I was a kid everyone wanted to work for Marvel, DC, newspaper strips, or Disney, but then stories and interviews would leak about how sucky these 'dream' jobs were.
I don't what these video games are or why people would want to make art for them, but I imagine it being like the animation & comic jobs of yesteryear—sounds good on paper but devoid of true creativity. I have similar stories of getting into graphic design, but too boring to get into here.
anyway, the best route is to make art for yourself and find a way to monetize online. don't know why more don't pursue the auteur route in an age geared towards auteurs.

Boomers are good actually. Most great artists were either boomers are pre-boomers.

There's no object, just pixels on a screen. There's the absence of the artist's hand in the final product, which is why so much digital so-called 'art' has a sameness to it.
