set yourself a stroke limit when you draw. I'd recomment trying to draw perfect geometrical shapes with a single line for practise.

Looks good so far, but if I were you I'd fix some of the shadows. In your ref most of the shadows look orange rather then dark which makes his skin look nice and smooth and makes his face look slightly broader than it does in your picture. I'd say take another very close look at each and every different shadow in the ref, and try to imitate their colors. Also, a true friend would ever so slightly deviate from the ref by adjusting the mouth, so it looks less derpy
