I couldn't care less about what Marvel or DC does.
What needs to happen is for another publisher (maybe a new one) to innovate both in content and format, and to get books in places where non-nerds congregate, like Circle Ks and head shops.
Think how EC Comics shook up the industry with their lurid subject matter and art/writing that was better than the rest of the industry. Not to mention stories you could read in one sitting without knowing 30+ years of continuity.
But realistically I think the future of American comics is more likely online than on paper.
