Because they can and because it looks cool/interesting when you've barely seen it before.
Or I guess to make their image have a sort of technical/ sci-fi look to it easily. Or you know, to actually simulate the chromatic aberration of a camera, because that's the idea the image should give off.
It's a fad and extremely overused by now and I think a lot of people have already stopped using it hence.
Personally, I think if done really subtly, it can make your image look sharper, but you may as well use sharpen filter for that.
