Why do books today feel like they're written either for retards or soulless engineers?

I have noticed this twice now. I noticed it first when I read Bridgman, but when I read Pen and Ink it was unmistakable. He goes into constant indepth explorations about the soul of art, the psychology behind what you're doing, philosophical musings, it feels like you are learning from someone who understands the deeper elements of what he's doing and not just a technician.

In contrast, new books all feel very technical. Whether it's the low brow "how to draw the owl" or the higher level, yet still extremely technical, Hamptons and Robertsons that will go into depth about exactly what your hand and the logical part of your mind should be doing but never scrape against the spiritual element of art at all.
