It's always still work, but if you are actually good at what you are drawing, it will feel less tedious. You will enjoy working on it and seeing it evolve.

And to draw mech shit, you must have a good sense for style. You want your design to look sleek like a Porsche. Yours looks rather like a box.

When I did pic related, for example, I had designs in mind from various things like anime, video games, real life aircraft, and then just tried to do my own version of it. Once you get the basic shapes down, you start adding details.

Pretty much, yes. Pic related is what I currently draw, but I am not really satisfied with it. I want to be able to do this better, and mostly have no real fucking clue what I am even doing.

Any suggestions how I could do better?

Well, let them keep dwelling in their generic moeblob then.
I just wanted to give my 2 cents to this thread, and my opinion is that more anime artist should try drawing in a more realistic style.

Like someone already pointed out, go and study artists like Otomo, or Nihei. Those guys really know how to make good art.

I'm not a very good artist myself, mainly because I don't draw often enough, but even though I am not very good, I still can draw more or less realistically if I want.
