Yeah old times- people never actually hyper-rendering their stuff, they keep the detail levels to a moderate amount. From a far, they seems extremely detailed but once you look at them slow and closely, they are just rough brushstrokes. I think that's the charm of art, you are not supposed to overdo it, instead make people feels like you overdo it.
