how do you feel about jean michel basquiat? pic related, its one of my favourite pieces of his.i can understand what you're saying about being able to 'see' that the artist has talent- i apply that logic to musicians (playing a simple guitar riff on purpose even though i know they could play much more complex pieces).
however with someone like basquiat, it's hard to know if he has fundamental skill or not. obviously he has knowledge of colour theory and texture, as well as atmosphere and action painting stuff like how the painting makes you feel and how it reflects what the artist is thinking and feeling, but i know a lot of people who think his work is dog shit.
at the end of the day some art isn't about skill at all in my opinion. Like when someone looks at a pollock painting and says "anyone could do that". like yeah, anyone COULD, but that's not the point of the art in question. he's not trying to flaunt skills- he's trying to tell a story with the brush strokes he uses.
or he isn't. sometimes he splashed paint on a canvas because it looked cool.
arguably pollock did have skills relating to composition, colour theory and mood etc. but i don't try to explain that to a lot of people because it always sounds like pretentious art garbage. (which it is)
