You don't have a photographic memory, so until you have a solid vis. library of things you're going to need to use reference. Like, quite often. Obviously there's no shame at all but until you know a certain subject matter in-and-out and in a 3D space "imagination" will be a challenge. That isn't to say you shouldn't practice things solely from imagination - just that a strong base will help you go further rather than not knowing anything at all.

I live in Kroea and I'm around a lot of so called artists and designers. There are a ton that are mediocre and not motivated.

Unrelated I agree that a career as any type of artist is difficult. However, it's all about finding your niche. If you really love art than you'll do well.
