Suggestions for how to study properly while busting ass?

I know to avoid mindless drawing, avoid symbol drawing, and avoid scribbling or staying in comfort zone. But what do?

What ratio of life drawing vs imaginary drawing? How much time spent drawing boxes/forms from imagination vs drawing boxes/forms from reference? Should I try to render exactly detailed like pic, or should I try to be more loose using forms to construct drawings? Do I need to do both detailed drawings & constructionist drawings?
