because tracing teaches you jack shit about understanding shapes, analysing depth and weight of what you see before you start drawing on the paper. tracing is a complete deception to beginners. you merely trace lines and of course the result will be kinda suprising: why? because you are fucking cheating.

what's bad about tracing is that it shows. of you are a /beg/ there is going to be this absolutely abysmal, unholy mix of correct proportions, but obvious mistakes in the line work, bad outlines, ugly structures and a complete lack of flow in the surfaces (say like, how you would give a leg in OP pic the right curveture)

i never resort to tracing. these are drawn from photos, but with my clipboard in my lap and the screen in front of me. same goes for nude and portrait drawing. no grid, no tracing.

TL;DR
>git gewd and stop thinking about tracing.

here's my two cents, if anyone is interested in bw traditional drawing stuff:

- have started out literally doing cross hatching and bw drawings exclusively during school
- always a clipboard and pieces of paper with me
- later started drawing people in tiny sketchbooks while travelling
- started drawing more, especially people sitting, waiting, reading, in coffee places, malls etc
- never resorted to shortcuts like Loomis, drawing boxes, these wooden posable figures or anything like that
- even later, nude and portrait drawing classes
- started actually going outside to draw with a travel easle, landscapes, nature, riversides

and i can't stress how important it is to find the right materials for you. the right paper is just as important as the right tools. anything that you start to feel comfortable with.
i used to hate charcoal, it was so messy and hard to control. found the right grade charcoal sticks that will get a sharp tip if you either sharpen them or use them for flat areas in between.

i think that there is no shorthand for developing a sense for space, shading, weight and proportions for figures etc. it all comes down to hard work, liking what you do, having enough time and allowing yourself to sink into your work for hours, forgetting about your surroundings.

you could also fix the morning star chain, a bit longer and make the tips pointy.

good, but i don't like how little you care about finishing a drawing. her right arm makes no sense, looks like a piece of wood or some 50s manekin
