I think you are most definitely crazy and taking things too far if you intend to explore the maths behind perspective projection as a drawing tool.

If I were you I would explore "advanced" perspective construction techniques, like moving, rotating, and mirroring objects, including curves and regular polygons. Or constructing objects with exact proportions and dimensions

I would also explore the relationship between the stationary point and the picture plane. IMO they are the 2 most fundamental ideas you have to work with when depecting a 3D world on a 2D surface. An intuitive understanding of what different SP/PP configurations and how to draw objects according to specific SP/PP configs would probably be a good tool for designing compositions. I haven't gotten there yet but I strive to.

If you haven't already, look up how to draw by scott robertson, the handprint website (and the perspective texts they cite), olsen's videos, and vandruff's videos.
