I'm trying to draw this picture as practice for negative space and using a unit of reference for proportion (right side of brain book). I keep thinking I have the proportion / lines right, only to realize its fucked later on, then i have to erase and retry. Is it cheating to take my fingers and use them to compare whats one the screen and on the paper for proportion? Cheating as in it will be detrimental to my skills and learning.

How can I stop this and start drawing what I see, I was doing it so well when I drew things upside down?
