The internet has always been like this. I would argue that 2004 was much, much crueler, things like Chrischan vs Bluespike is just surface level shit compared to what people were capable of. Hell when I was 12, I posted my shitty photoshop art onto some old trolling forum and got told to kill myself, even got a private message that was linked to a virus site and almost got my PC bricked- but I laughed and acted goofy overall, because everyone always said "internet is (not) serious business", and there wasn't too much business opportunity back then too. Just don't be retarded like revealing your phone number or provoke the wrong people and you're all good.

But now a days its rare to even see /ic/ be vicious as they were in the past. Newfags and summershits posting their own threads asking for special critique on their calarts SU original character do not steals are kindly told to read the sticky/use the general thread, and might even get feedback for their doodles.
