What's the point in realism and why is /ic/ so obsessed with it?

Composition, shape language, color theory.
Can be studied by-the-books but unless you are autistic (in the literal sense of the word, aka, a lack of intuition and agency) it is an innate ability that can be honed further simply by expanding your visual library. You passively absorb this skill simply by observing the world and art other people create. That's why you can critique a piece of art even if you aren't at that particular artist's skill level, how you can recognize what looks stylish and what looks like shit.

The "artists eye" or whatever the fuck you wanna call it. If you want to develop this skill fast I suggest reading into the technical aspects of the first things I listed, as well as looking at a bunch of art. Good and bad, and try to analyze what "clicks" and what doesn't. Of course you should also be doing this alongside practicing techniques on your own.

I don't get it

My mother thinks that me doing studies of the skeleton is morbid.

Dad (who isn't an artist, but has a drafting sort of way of doodling) remembers when he was in elementary school and his teachers called in his parents to talk because his use of the black crayon over other colors apparently meant he was having some kind of dark mental issues.
