Well ultimately before you learn to stylised something, you have to first understand its original form. You cannot warp when you don't understand the nature of the thing you're warping.

SLB, on top of understanding his structures and anatomy though, has studied a lot from the old illustrative styles of the 60's and 70's, masters like Glen Keane and such. If I had to make any personal recommendations though, on top of studying from real life, look at artists like Tony Fucile (worked on The Iron Giant, The Incredibles) and Paulo Ignez. I'll post some examples of their work from my own collection.
