Tips for poses and gestures?

For example, how does Oh Great! draw this shit? Does he just have a handful of go-to poses? Because, real tricks aren't this acrobatic, and good reference is scarce.

I understand that gesture drawing helps, but getting the anatomy and positioning right is hard without proper reference, not to mention, how do you even THINK of poses like these?
