It depends on the endgame of your particular project.

Design work lends itself to lots of experiments and most not immediately useful, but are steps to the greater aspirations of the work. Ideas must make it to paper before you can utilize them,so be forgiving of yourself when randomly sketching them,since they are but notes to yourself and not meant for public consumption.

The intensive detailed stuff should be reserved for the final drafts of larger work, where the previous bits drawn roughly are laid carefully in their places. And don't hesitate to detail these foreshadowings either. Drawing for "fun" is as important as completing complex works,since you get and refine these ideas for the bigger stuff.
