I preferred Keys, the author seemed a little more passionate about the craft, but both are good /beg/ books. Nikolaides doesn't tell you anything about the quality of line, so afterwards you should supplement it with either Drawabox, a bit of Loomis, Mattesi's Force or any approach that doesn't scribble mindlessly - you could pick up some bad habbits that way.

Copying pictures IS helpful, but don't just copy the marks - if the picture is there, it's to illustrate a point. Be a detective, try to see what it is trying to communicate and capture that.
