Squint. With pencil you can't paint lighter values so to make your lighters stand out, you need to darken all the other values in relation. I would say don't fear and go darker than you see for all your shadow shapes at the start, they will make things pop out more, as you get better observing you will naturally do less drastic contrast.
Nonetheless everyone at the beginning goes and uses values very faintly lol, which makes things washed out. But we all have been there I feel.
