The lighting being off is the big takeaway for me. The highlights and direction of lighting is chaoric and all over the place, and generally doesn't make sense.

Why is the foreground so much more darker and shadowy than the middle ground characters? Not to mention the direction of light for the foreground "Sinner", the midground cultists, and the Cult Leader in the center are all different when there's zero logical reason for it to be so. It looks like some artist just went wild with the burn tool to add random shadowing to give the elements more "oomph"

Oh and the colour tone of the foreground and middle ground elements don't really match the background (it's sunnier/yellower in tone),

Lastly that shack on fire, with the smoke? Looks like shit, like it doesn't even begin to blend into the scene and looks tacked on as fuck.

My hot take.

It's not a style, it's a mix of techniques used in evoking the author's intent.

Usually lighting is crucial to how we percieve things and forms and it sets the mood. See pic related for photographers, but it's actually very similar/practically same for painting.

If you use a lot of soft shadows, delicate ambient light, strategicaly placed highlights etc. you can do lots of stuff.

See the photo you posted. Light caught around the hair of a woman makes a glow around her head as if she has aureola of a saint. Light in the gown radiates, while the nudity is both visible and obscured in the way that leaves something to imagination.

If you play those elements well and leave something "for the viewer" to solve about the picture, it is subtle, tasteful and interesting. That's also why pornfags are in 99% cases delusional, stagnating idiots that don't understand that besides carnal appeal there should be some mystery and subtelty for the viewer to appreciate. Some narrative.

you have no idea what youre doing with the shading, anime characters still follow rules of light you know, just with simplified forms. Look at something like this and understand your face still has the basic shapes like the cheeks and stuff, and it looks like youre fine with not choosing muddy colors
