If you're gonna draw top down construction to figure out perspective, I find it helps to draw 'perspective' lines from the viewing point to figure out the proportions of how much of each thing you see. Though looking at the quality of my work I would say you should just practice from looking at drawings that don't suck and don't listen to me.
