But, it just seems impossible. Western society parents are too lax. If you don't study and work hard in China or Korea or Japan you find the nearest bridge and jump off it. If you fail in the west you get a good job sticker and are told you are special.

Either way I think these days, just exploit the system. If people are willing to pay for you through patreon for drawing things that pander to the public, then do so.
You have to evaluate if you'd rather do something that's not exactly your dream and make some money, or work your dreamjob for insane hours and a horrible wage.

I think OP is in search of a specific intro to japanese comic aesthetics, which actually are pretty fucking extensive and unique, regardless of the majority of their public in the western world being fucking retarded. Not just the aesthetic, the production process itself is pretty unique and rather interesting regardless.
