I don’t know if this has been mentioned by anyone, but after 6 years of drawing I’ve only just realized that all the books and videos out there only teach you what can be communicated. There’s a massive amount of stuff that hasn’t, or can’t, be put into words, that you have you discover yourself through practice. And it doesn’t stop there - great artists are doing some things intuitively, that they often aren’t even conscious of. Take the Lascaux cave drawings for instance, many of them are extremely gestural, despite the fact they were drawn tens of thousands of years before someone put a name to that fundamental.
