Remember also that it's beneficial to have a foreground, midground and background with a focal point that all read. It's fine to darken the background and omit a lot of detail, if old masters are anything to go by, and push the silhouette and shapes.

If you greyscale a lot of good modern digital artists' work you will see that there is a clearly defined fore, mid and background, with a focal point usually in the form of a subject like a creature or object, communicated via value. Foreground to background, progressively lighter from dark. I'm sure you *know* this, but do greyscale your pieces every time you start putting base values down and check how it reads.
