ITT: Retards who think that your prices are determined by how good you are, or by how long it took you to make something.

Your work is worth however much value it generates for the client. This same work could generate $200 in a private commission, or $500 as a private commission, or $2,000 as the key art for an large marketing promo, or $800 as artwork for a trading card game, etc. etc. A piece like this could cost wildly different amounts depending on who it's for and how it's used, even if the workload is exactly the same. How your work is used is much more important than how it's made.

This thread is full of mental retardation.

No one has any obligation to listen to or accept your bullshit. You are free to express your opinions, and unless you're breaking the platforms rules, you will not be banned from social media. Art & creative directors are overwhelmingly left-leaning. They have every right to not want to work with you if you're posting about your support for Trump (for example).

On track to be making ~$40k this year (based in the US), or ~$3.3k per month solely through my illustration work. I had a goal of $3k/month for this year, so its great to have surpassed that. Been freelancing full time since late 2013, but only really started to hit a stride around 2015-2016ish, and my career has been growing year after year. I'm shooting for around $4k/month in 2019.

Income is primarily composed of freelance jobs & passive income from shirt & print sales. Freelance jobs are typically for businesses, supplying illustrations for projects they're working on, and are usually sourced from reaching out to them directly to share my portfolio & availability, but also through referrals, job sites & organic discovery online. Passive income is built up on Redbubble, Amazon & Etsy+Printful integration.

The biggest red flag that an /ic/ user is an absolute fucking moron is this:

They think the whole world of ALL professional art revolves around
>sci-fi / fantasy illustration
>concept art
>furry porn
>sexy digital painting pin-ups of attractive women
>Porn patreons
>fast-food style commission charts on DA & Tumblr, drawing peoples "OC"

All of which people lump together and label it 'the industry'. And that's it. There are hordes of people here who believe these are the ONLY options available for making a living with your art (specifically 2D drawing). They simply cannot accept the fact that you can be a freelance illustrator that doesn't do any of the above, let alone any other type of art / medium. And peoples attitude here is not a matter of being ignorant of other types of opportunities (though many are), or simply having a preference for this type of work - it's an outright denial that if you're not doing one of the above, then you're somehow not a real artist.

>nintendo and pokemon
Pokemon - I think so. I think I've heard of Game Freak (partial owner of Pokemon) doing takedowns. Nintendo - not at all. Nintendo is honestly the most lenient of them all. It's the reason you'll see so much Nintendo shit on sites (I have a fair share of my own as well). It's kind of ironic because Nintendo is well known for shutting down fan projects without even blinking, but they've just turned a complete blindeye to people selling fan work on these sites.

I haven't really kept up a list of IPs to avoid and it's hard to think of them off the top of my head. It's also important to note that somethings will be taken off some platforms and left on others, for reasons I don't know. For example, I've had a Rocket League inspired design removed from Etsy, but it's still up on Redbubble.

I have 2 examples of trendy IPs that have been gutted and should be avoided. Rick & Morty came out and started gaining a bunch of popularity. If you create a design for a super popular, 'in-the-now' show, game or movie, you can really ride that popularity wave and make fantastic sales. I made a Mr. Meeseeks design that did fairly well and netted a few hundred bucks. However, the copyright holders caught on and went on a purge and totally wiped all Rick & Morty designs out. Another example of this happening was Stranger Things - I know people who were riding that wave hardcore and made a ton of sales off it, and also made a ton of designs for it. The purge came and they lost everything.

I think this is a risky IP, but there's a lot of stuff out there so who knows.
>i thought that if star wars is popular then drawing some mugs or stickers will bring me moneys
You thought this, but so have tens of thousands of other people.

>>3519565
I really don't recommend doing this. Not because it'll be detrimental to your success or you'll be 'caught', but rather that it's just a waste of time.

>do you need a whole board just for a few threads?
>I say we get rid of /ic/ and move all quality generals to some other board.

If we move all "quality generals" to a different board, how is that different than /ic/ which is "a whole board just for a few threads"?

This is a dumb post likely written from a phenomenally retarded person.

>I know because I've been in this for decades and I still haven't figured
In what for decades? Trying to become a professional artist? You're saying you've been trying for at least 20 years and you still haven't figured out how to make it work?

>I still haven't figured a) out and when I temporarily succeeded in
What are you even try to say here?

>The "secrets" to how to actually make art aren't secret at all
How would you know, if you are a self-admitted failure who hasn't gotten a grasp on their career spanning decades and can only attribute their temporary successes down to pure luck? Also, you say you know that 'most of the actual secrets' have to do with social media and getting your foot in the door, but then you turn around and say there are no secrets and that it's all Loomis and hard work. Which is it?

Do you suffer from brain damage? What is wrong with you?

'The industry' is a catch-all term for what /ic/ thinks the world of professional art revolves around. It includes:

>fantasy & sci-fi illustration
>concept art
>tumblr character commissions (often with those fast-food style commission charts)
>porn patreons
>furry commissions

To much of /ic/, these are the only way to make a living with any form of art. Even when just focusing on 2D art, there isn't just one 'industry'. There are many - but because they don't focus on digital paintings of dragons or space marines, people here dismiss them as being not legitimate opportunities for professional 2D artists. For example, there's never really a whole lot of talk on /ic/ about being a general 'freelance illustrator', which is ironic since it's such a drawing-focused community. A versatile freelance illustrator can dip their toes into commissioned jobs relating to editorial, gig posters, murals, branding, portraits, apparel, comics, books, advertising, etc. and do great. Even when taken individually, there are whole, massive industries that revolve around each of these types of jobs.

It's one thing to not know about opportunities outside of what you know due to inexperience, but it's another to believe that these are the only real career opportunities for ALL professional artists.

I think I'm ready for figure drawing.

BUT I really want to learn how to draw the head and hands too.
