I made my research on character design with the anons in the OC redraw thread; if you want to nail your character designs, here's some guides it could help you.
>A good character design is easy to read even without a literal description of them or their lore
When designing, you have to be able to tell the basics of a character using their visual design alone, stuff like who they are, what they do, what they like, etc... if you can make the viewer understand the basic of your character without having to explain much to them, you are on a good track.
>A good character design stands out
When designing, think of those special visual traits that make your character not only different, but interesting as well, something like visual cues. Visual cues are important because they can be used to tell something about your character and make them stand out better.
>A good character design stays true to it's basics regardless of art skills
This is tricky, but if your design is good enough, your character should be able to maintain their essence even if it's drawn by a beg or a pro. If the character's basics are unconsciously overwitten when someone redraws them, then there's a few things missing.
>A good character design is engaging and fun
This is the most difficult, yet most rewarding part, your character needs to be able to not only hook the viewer, but also keep them engaged, it's that spark that makes them feel happy to see them or happy to draw them. This is difficult to achieve as it's quite subjective, but usually it helps to keep the design simple and true to all tips above.

Here's a stupid test I made to let go steam from college stuff.
I wanted to see if my blondie's design could blend well enough with other blondies that can well be compared to her. There's barely any reasonable procedure here, just me seeing if her design was on pair with the other two when reduced to these very small chibis; sometimes I get the feeling her design is still pretty amateurish and Donut-Steel-like, but Im not really sure anymore.
