You shouldn't really be color picking from the ref to begin with. As the other anon said, tile your colors and then blend some of the edges to be softer or lost. A very common beginner mistake with digital is to overblend. Think with very simple shapes and planes like boxes, cylinders, and spheres, and it makes it a lot easier to manage a painting. Blending should be the last thing you really think of. Only place I would definitely lean toward a soft brush is the face. Contrast of hue, value, and saturation can all be used to make hard or soft edges.
