This isn't quite what you're asking, but I grew out of hating on the "flat", graphic style of illustration that's super trendy right now. You know, the style that /ic/ continually dunks on on a weekly basis for being "corporate" and "soulless".

I tried doing it a bit, and I actually ended up really enjoying it. It's incredibly fun, low stress, quick and in demand. I enjoyed it so much, that I ended up tailoring my entire professional illustration portfolio to include work that is similar to this type of work (though not quite the same - I still have my own style going on). The result is that I've never been busier in my life, professionally speaking. My freelance career is doing better than ever and I'm having a much, much easier time landing well paying, easy opportunities - all while being creatively satisfied.

This is coming from someone who used to be obsessed with digital painting, Ruan Jia, concept art, etc. - typical /ic/ stuff.
