For example, that first panel took me a few looks to see the face. The myriad of shapes and lines along with the different colors on different sides of the surfaces doesn't frame the shape well (and the blacked out eyes being lost in the dark colors, meaning my attention is not drawn to them being eyes at all)

Perhaps not your color choice, but your color values are not separating the features well enough.
