>there's no way of even attempting to learn that doesn't risk a net loss (not just spending time, money and surplus, but also locking yourself into bad habits and making it harder to try again)
Why are you so afraid of wasting time? Just do it. You need to accept that you will make mistakes. There's no way of self teaching yourself something perfectly the first way around. It's not a straight path to learning art. It's a tedious process of learning something one way and going back and relearning it again.

>it says nothing in particular, implies that failure is always a result of laziness/egoism, has a high entrance hurdle for little likely payoff and denies that there's a "safe" method
That's the thing. It's just like learning anything else creative. THERE IS NO STRAIGHT FORWARD METHOD. YOU WILL MAKE MISTAKES

People just get over the pain of learning art by being more motivated and just enjoying the process instead of complaining. If you really do not enjoy learning art, then you should not waste your time.

If you don't have the confidence to self-direct your own studies, this is something you need to fix in yourself. before you even set your sights on trying to illustrate.

Let's be honest, as good Bouguereau is, the op is far from one of his better works
