I don't think it gets said enough on /ic/, but I REALLY appreciate your post and advice. It confirmed exactly what I was beginning to suspect of myself. Anyone can copy shapes and render with enough practice. But to be able to compose a scene that takes its viewer into the artist's world is the very human expression I started art for. Thank you for your guidance.

Embarassingly, no book currently. Keys become a bit 'obvious' -- meaning, everything it taught was something I felt like I already knew. Lately I've been studying other artists and watching them paint on youtube. If you're interested, here are some of the more valuable ones:
