Those structures around the pillar need some work. Time to whip out the ruler and straightedge and a full sheet of paper. As for the hair issue I'd say try making your own character sheets but for hair, then compare and contrast the different styles and shapes they used. I'd also do something about your hand going numb. Are you gorilla gripping your pencils? Maybe change your grip.
