It's a lot about opportunity. I'm not a weeb and I think manga has its own problems, but in the western world there is no structure in place that says "let's try serializing this new thing in our popular magazine". You can't make pic related today and expect it to get published anywhere or get any traction on the basis that it's original. That's why production value is so important in the west and people are obsessed with making prufeshunal art. You would be surprised to see that a lot of manga have 'bad' art and Japanese people like things that are drawn 'badly' because they actually give a damn about the comics they read. Comics in the west are just dead, there are more comic makers than comic consumers.

Make short stories first. Any mangaka you can name published a bunch of short stories in smaller magazines before they got their big projects serialized.
