good rule of thumb is to know the difference between a "jumping" ball and a "bouncing" ball. a jumping ball sticks to the ground a bit longer and has way more time to squash and stretch, whereas an actual bouncing ball analogous to reality will only be on the ground for a single frame. jumping balls are typically what most non-animator animation purists would see and worship thinking it's what everybody SHOULD do, but it tends to be too over-exaggerated to be useful in many situations. a bouncing ball shouldn't contact with the ground for too long, especially if it's moving in a specific direction where the speed has to slowly roll off with every bounce.
I animated a small representation of what either looks like bouncing in place.
