The anon who actually drew merc_wip wasn't even in the argument. Some other guy just posted it when asked to post his work.
He had only posted it once one or two days before the argument and he had been drawing for 4,5 years before the picture was made

It took off because its basically a lot of tropes with some artists all condensed to one picture. The generic design, still lifelessness
and the "mercenary" while having decent rendering. All combined became the epitome of cliches. And thus it became a meme.
