Lines that are carefully measured in the first place don't need to be erased. Just getting the initial rectangular frame and envelope right will noticeably improve your work. Use a ruler to measure all your lines carefully and approximate every curve with straight lines. It also helps not to jump into portraits, try copying something with clearly defined lines like pic related.

You might be confused by all the detail in the rocks. Try copying Blossom. If you can get her right, it's probably just about training your brain to pick out the most important lines in a picture.
