It's not real "gesture drawing", it's more like basic form drawing. The point of this exercise is to learn to "approximate" as closely as possible the final drawing with only simple shapes. It's the same as what Steve Huston was talking about with simple and characteristic shapes. You don't want to be too mechanical with these.
